Monday Morning Devo - Surprises

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Exodus 3:1-2, NKJV.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking Moses was a teeny bit surprised by this. Some surprises, like the flowers pictured above, are welcome. Some, like the assignment Moses was about to get from God, would lead to a life of hardship and disappointment for him--and yet, it had a positive forever impact on the Hebrew people.

Our church had a bit of a surprise this weekend. We were supposed to hear our new pastor preach his first sermon here--but instead, we found he'd been hospitalized and our church was left to improvise. Which we did, and nicely. Isn't it nice to know that people have your back?

Like Moses who came to know God really did have his back, that's something we can also know. God will send His helpers when they're needed. In Moses's case, it was his brother Aaron. When our church was suddenly left without a preacher for the day, one of the congregation ably gave a very nice sermon.

We are never alone.

Lord, You were God of the surprising all the way through the Bible, and You still are today. Thank You not only for the pleasant surprises but also for those that might seem forbidding and frightening at the time. You always have a plan, and things will come out right in the long run. For Jesus's glory forever, Amen.

Oh--in case you were worried--the pastor is fine now, and he will be preaching next Sunday.
